The best way to get to Pondicherry from Chennai (150 km) is by road. The drive is best handelled by locals. A taxi hired from Pondicherry would provide the ideal solution, however buses offer a cheaper option. The Tamil Nadu state express bus stand also known as Thiruvalluvur, has buses to Pondicherry at regular intervals. The East-coast road is more scenic than the National Highway 45. 

The other option to reach Pondicherry is from Bangalore a distance of 320 Km can be covered about seven hours, though the roads are improved, certain sections could pose a challenge to an inexperienced driver. Once in Pondicherry, a maximum fare of Rs.25 will get you anywhere within the boulevards.
